On Saturday, September 13, the Pottsgrove High School fields were full of competition and community spirit. From 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., the Girls’ Field Hockey team hosted its Second Annual Field Hockey Playday, an event that is quickly becoming a highlight of their fall season.
While the event serves as a fundraiser, it is also a celebration of the sport, bringing together youth programs from across the region. This year, the tournament welcomed teams from kindergarten through sixth grade, with participating squads traveling from neighboring districts, including Pope John Paul II and Boyertown.
Although the Playday is a mandatory event for the high school roster, the team embraced the long hours with enthusiasm. The event offers a unique opportunity for the high school players to step into a different role of leadership. The student-athletes managed every aspect of the day’s operations, from staffing the bustling snack bar to running a popular free face-painting station for the younger players.
The most challenging task for the high schoolers was officiating. The girls were responsible for refereeing games across various age brackets—a job that requires quick decision-making, authority, and a deep understanding of the rules. Despite the difficulty of the task, the team handled the pressure smoothly, ensuring the games ran smoothly and with minimal errors. For the youth players, seeing the high school athletes in charge provided inspiring examples of sportsmanship and dedication.
Behind this huge, successful event was Head Coach Sydney Coleman. Coach Sydney organized the entire 10-hour event, coordinating everything from field scheduling to stocking the concessions. She even added a personal touch to the fundraising efforts by designing and creating custom t-shirts, which were sold throughout the day.
The atmosphere on the field was electric. Despite the long day, players and attendees noted that the Playday felt less like an obligation and more like a celebration. It served as a bonding experience for the high school team, strengthening their chemistry both on and off the field.
The community’s support translated into a massive financial success for the program. Through admission fees, concession sales, and t-shirt purchases, the team raised over $4,000. These funds have already been put to good use, directly benefiting the student-athletes who worked so hard to make the day possible. The proceeds were used to purchase new, high-quality sports backpacks for every member of the high school team.
With the success of this second year, the Pottsgrove Field Hockey Playday has firmly established itself as a premier local event, fostering the next generation of players while supporting the current varsity stars.
