Leak of Abortion Decision Becomes Fresh Issue

The Constitution is one of our country’s most important documents, if not the most important. Unfortunately, as time moves forward our Constitution begins facing challenges from those with different beliefs. We’ve had vetoed and over-thrown amendments in the Constitution for better and for worse. Now, we are facing one of the biggest political debates we’ve had since 1973. Should abortions be illegalized.

According to abc news Leader , Chuck Schumer, and House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, both said, “The Republican-appointed Justices’ reported votes to overturn Roe v. Wade would go down as an abomination, one of the worst and most damaging decisions in modern history.” One of the main people Schumer and Pelosi are blaming is Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. They are blaming McConnell because he had decided to fill Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s seat the seven weeks before the 2020 election. However, this is not the reason; the reason behind their blame is for holding Justice Antonin Scalia’s seat open for 11 months during the Obama presidency creating the majority that has Roe ready to fall during this battle.

McConnell isn’t the only Republican senator being blamed, however. Pelosi and Schumer are blaming all of the Republican senators, claiming that they and the “Trump justices” have been planning this. This is being seen as a political takeover.

Depending on the ending results of this political debate could change the whole political game. This will affect the generations of today a lot and those that are generations older. Our country may not be prepared for the results and the aftermath of this court ruling. Whether it be the terms of politics or questions of basic access to abortion services, no one is prepared for what will come next. This basic access to abortion services has been given to all Americans since 1973, the child-bearing age.

With not being prepared for what will come next but also for the ripple effects. According to PBS NewsHour , if this ruling goes through and illegalizes abortions it will cause a ripple giving the other states a “green light” to create their own restrictions on abortion. Some states have already passed “trigger laws” that will automatically ban abortion if Roe is to be overturned.

This is a very dangerous game that the Republicans are playing. While the Republicans are fighting to overturn Roe, the Democrats are fighting for Roe. “The central choice in the 2022 elections will be about who will defend our freedom,” Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney, D-N.Y., the chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. “Democrats will fight like hell to protect them.”
