Now in theaters! Dune! The French Dispatch! And coming soon, Last Night in Soho! Many of the most anticipated movies of the year come out this month. Dune, directed by Denis Villeneueve, comes out October 22nd in theaters and on HBO Max. Dune is a sci-fi film about a gifted young man born into a great destiny. Villeneueve is known for directing Blade Runner 2049, Prisoners, and many more. It stars Timotheé Chalamet, Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, Jason Mamoa, Rebecca Ferguson, and more. Dune is based on a science fiction book by Frank Herbert, and is a movie that was made in 1984 directed by David Lynch, which was a huge commercial flop. According to IndieWire, David Lynch, who is known for creating Twin Peaks, has explained he has “zero interest” to see this remake because of how traumatizing his 1984 failure was. On the other hand, this Dune remake is expected to be a hit, as it received an eight-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival and has already been greenlit for a sequel, which will also be directed by Denis Villenueve. The film is also holding an 89% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 135 reviews.

Another highly anticipated movie coming this month is The French Dispatch. The French Dispatch, described as “a love letter to journalists set in an outpost of an American newspaper in a fictional 20th century French city”, in a short synopsis, also comes out October 22nd. The film is directed by Wes Anderson, the beloved director known for his beautiful visuals. Wes has made movies such as The Grand Budapest Hotel and Fantastic Mr. Fox. The French Dispatch has a very star-studded cast including Bill Murray, Timothée Chalamet, Frances McDormand, and Owen Wilson just to name a few. From the trailers, this film looks like Wes Anderson’s most sophisticated and polished film. This movie is also expected to be a hit, receiving a nine-minute standing ovation at Cannes Film Festival. The French Dispatch holds an 81% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 62 reviews.

Lastly is the film Last Night in Soho, coming to theaters October 29th. This comes from the mind of Edgar Wright, who was behind Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and Baby Driver. This movie is a psychological thriller about an aspiring fashion designer who all of a sudden, can enter the 60s. She encounters a glamorous wannabe singer, but things soon take a dark turn. This film stars up and coming, Thomasin McKenzie, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Matt Smith. Last Night in Soho may not do as well as the other two films, because it holds an approval rating of 70% based on 67 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. But I think we can expect this film to be Wright’s most stylish and ambitious film. With such great movies coming this month, we can all look forward to what’s next.
