A night full of undeniably exhilarating match-ups and energy, this first-year event brought large smiles, friendship, and lots of sweat from all teams. The Doom Dome Tournament on Thursday, March 27th from 6 pm to 8:30 pm is a first-time event created by the- now largest club in the school- Aevidum. The event’s purpose was to fundraise for the club to be able to continue to carry out their mission to improve mental health and issues that teens face. Their motto is “I’ve Got Your Back.”
Mr. Desiderio, the AP environmental science and biology teacher, and Mrs. Berwager, a biology teacher, are the faculty advisors of the mental health club. This club, created two years ago, has grown to have over 50 members. They are excited about this progression, but it is a very daunting task to facilitate the large number of students. Other well-known events at Pottsgrove are the Volleyball Tournament that NHS hosts at the High school and the younger kids’ Doom Dome Tournament at Lower Elementary School, which is very successful.
The game “Doom Dome” is a mix between dodgeball and tower defense. To set up the game, you need to make a line down the middle of the court to separate the two sides. Each team can have 5-8 players. Before the game, the players have to make a Dome out of 6 hula hoops. At the start of the game, the players run to the middle of the court to grab the dodgeballs set up on the line of divide. They throw balls at the other team’s dome, in an attempt to knock over the dome completely. Each team has a “guard” who can protect the dome. After knocking the other team’s dome over 3 times, the team wins that match. The team whose dome was knocked down during a point, has to also build their dome back up within 15 seconds to stay in the round for the full three points. Teams are eliminated after 2 overall losses. The last dome standing wins.
The team whose dome was last standing this year was the “5 Big Dooms,” including seniors: Jack Thompson, Carter Burg, Julius Marshall, Brandon McGinley, and Owen Mountz. The boys only suffered one loss, but won all other rounds! During the difficult match between the teacher team, “We’re Not Old Yet,” and a student team, “Great Wall Of China,” the teacher team got super close to the win with the score coming back to 2-2, but the student team pulled through and eliminated the teachers. Finally, the “Great Wall Of China” came in second place overall. The first place team got their selection of gift cards, and the second-place team got their selection of candy!!
