As the musical season begins, many ask, “How do the directors choose the musical?”. It has been a theme this year that the Pottsgrove Theater Program has been wanting to shy away from the “Disney” shows and get into a sort of realism that we have not done in the past. The last few musicals have been, Beauty and the Beast, Anything Goes, and The Addams Family, which are fantastic shows, but not as serious as our program could be. When asking Mr. Einhorn, the music/pit director, how the process was completed, he said that there were a couple of factors. As directors, they ask themselves what they want to put on our stage. This also goes along with the student talent we will have that particular year. The next part of the selection process has to do with whether the show provides all aspects of what they are looking for in a musical. In this case, they wanted a more serious show, and therefore the idea to present Fiddler on the Roof was born. The last decision going into the show, and arguably the most important, is figuring out budgeting, knowledge, and staffing to make the show the best it can be. The directors usually sit and meet several times to discuss and narrow down their choices. This time around, the goal was to change the mood of Pottsgrove’s past ventures and dive into a more serious message. The directors are excited as this is not something they have done before and are ready to start!
