Monday, April 22nd is Earth Day, here are a few ways to celebrate and clean up our environment at the same time.
- Start a compost bin. A compost bin is something where you can put any organic waste, like orange peels or apple cores, you can use compost as fertilizer for your plants and the environment.
- Make a bird feeder. There are many ways to make a bird feeder using things you would typically throw away, like an empty 2-liter bottle, or an egg carton, there are many tutorials online.
- Donate old clothes to Goodwill or blankets to animal shelters.
- Start a garden, instead of going to the grocery store and receiving berries in plastic containers and vegetables in a plastic bag, start growing your own, it’s organic and better for the environment.
- Pick up Garbage. This is one of the most popular Earth Day tasks. Go out in your neighborhood or local park and pick up trash and items that can be recycled.
- Volunteer. Around the area, there are many opportunities to volunteer for Green Allies at the Arboretum.
- Recycle eclipse glasses. The recent solar eclipse that happened last Monday required people to wear special glasses because looking directly at it damages your eyes. North America will not see another solar eclipse until 2044 and by then the glasses will be expired. South America will be experiencing an annular solar eclipse in October, so you can donate your used glasses so children in schools have a safe way to learn and witness the eclipse.
