Climate Change has taken the world by storm in recent years due to the recent temperatures. As most people know, climate change is a global phenomenon that is created by temperature slowly warming over time. This can be natural or from burning fossil fuels which puts gas emissions into our atmosphere. In recent years, it has become a more rapid change. This can be seen in the record heat this summer, as well as the warmth in Autumn. The fall season is usually greeted with sweatshirts and sweatpants, but this year it is tank tops and shorts.
On March 20th, 2023, the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate) released the AR6 synthesis report on the updates of this impending problem. According to their report, the impact of human-caused change will continue to worsen. A few of these changes can cause a rise in disease, water scarcity, a decrease in food production, and a rise in endangered species.
The NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association) also stated that climate change will continue to raise ocean levels and will create more natural disasters. The NOAA stated, “Earth’s temperature has risen by an average of 0.14° Fahrenheit (0.08° Celsius) per decade since 1880, or about 2° F in total.” This small jump in temperature may not seem like a lot, but that is not the case. This has already changed habitats and weather, which lessens snow and ice coverage while adding more rainfall.
Unsurprisingly, not a lot of people know what fossil fuels are. They are used to produce energy like heat, electricity, power cars as well as other transportation, etc. Fossil fuels also create carbon dioxide which is one of the few greenhouse gases produced. These gases rise into the atmosphere which then become trapped, causing the climate to get warmer.
Humanity has limited time to fix our planet, but it isn’t impossible to do. The goal is to cut down on the amount of emissions in our atmosphere. There are things that you can do to help even if it is something small, like riding a bike or walking to a place rather than using a car. If people take the time to care, the Earth will thank everyone in return.
