50% of Adolescents and teens consume energy drinks on a chronic basis. These studies have shown that students who consume energy drinks have shown improvement in physical and cognitive function. Georgia Southern University performed a study that found 30-50% of young adults consume energy drinks and 51% of said percentage, consume energy drinks regularly. Teens consume energy drinks for a number of different reasons whether it be for an energy boost or for taste.
Georgia Southern University performed a study that found teens in grades 7-11 had a boost in energy, improved cognitive and physical performance, as well as a faster response to stimuli. Studies have also shown a boost in athletic performance of those who have consumed caffeinated drinks. Ivy et al. conducted an experiment with members of a cycling team. Participants were given either a flavored placebo or a Red Bull. During the Cycling Trial, participants who consumed the real Red Bull showed improved performance, which proves the positive effects of energy drinks in relation to physical activity. Mets et al. performed a test on the effects energy drinks have in long distance driving. 24 participants were split into three groups. Group one drove for 4 hours with a 15 minute break when they drank 250ml of Red Bull. Group two did the same routine but with a flavored placebo, and group three just drove for 4 hours nonstop. Group one showed significantly improved performance in dealing with traffic and similar difficulties as well as a decrease in tiredness and road rage.
