Golden Globes Nominations: The Elephant in the Room
December 14, 2022
Monday, December 12th, the 2023 Golden Globe nominations were announced. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has dropped these nominations, with “The Banshees of Inisherin” leading with a total of 8 nominations! With all these star studded nominations, doesn’t mean we shouldn’t talk about the “elephant in the room”. The HFPA has not kept a squeaky clean reputation, raising concerns for their eligibility of holding a reliable and respectful award ceremony. The Golden Globes was not televised earlier this year due to troubling allegations that arose from an exposé written about the HFPA. NBC had pulled the plug on the Golden Globes due to the allegations. The HFPA was accused of lack of representation and diversity after it had come out there were no black voters on the board. This causes a lack of variety within the people choosing these nominations.
Another big issue with the HFPA is the disturbing allegations towards the former HFPA former president Philip Berk. Actor, Brendan Fraser accused Berk of sexually assaulting him in 2003. Brendan, who was at the peak of his career, had been blacklisted from Hollywood after coming out with these allegations. Brendan has just made his comeback to the industry with the lead role of “The Whale” directed by Darren Aronofsky. Ironically, Brendan Fraser has been nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance in the film. Before nominations dropped, Brendan announced he will not attend the ceremony if he gets nominated or not. Among Brendan Fraser, Will Smith and Tom Cruise will also be boycotting the ceremony. Comedian Jerrod Carmichael will be hosting the 80th Annual Golden Globe Awards on January 10th, 2023.
