TikTok vs the Music Industry
January 25, 2021
The popular video-sharing app, TikTok, has had a major impact on the music people listen to and stream today. On TikTok users can make videos that range from 3 seconds to a minute about a variety of topics. Some of the most popular videos are dance-related with songs in the background. When a new dance trend goes around the song is repeatedly used. Most users will then search up the song and make the artist more popular by listening more often. Senior Shyann Lopez-Termine says she “Sometimes scrolls pass a video with music on it and starts dancing!” This then makes her look up the song and add it to her playlist.
Some artists that have had their hits go viral on TikTok are; Megan thee Stallion, Doja Cat, Lil Nas X, Yung Gravy, and many more! Their songs were a part of trends that ultimately gave them more recognition to kick start their successful careers. TikTok has recently started paying artists royalties for their songs being streamed on the app as well. When asked if she’s ever listened to a song she originally found on TikTok senior Kyla Hutchinson says, “Of course, is that even a question? I feel like everyone has.” Her statement proves how much of an impact the social media app has had on the music world.
